Chapter Nine

Margot shuffled along the corridor with Nancy behind her. She kept trying to slow down, but Nancy wouldn’t hear of it. They followed Odds, and he had already turned the corner up ahead.

“Stop pushing, Nancy,” Margot complained. “I’m going as fast as I can.”

“How is that crawl fast, Margot? You’re just afraid. Admit it.”

Margot stepped to the side, and Nancy tumbled forward. She caught the wall to keep herself from falling over onto the floor. Margot felt justified. “If you’re so brave, you go ahead of me.”

Nancy stopped walking. “I wasn’t the one who left Lyle behind.”

“He was sick. I couldn’t drag the poor man out into these drafty hallways.”

“But he told us to wait. You being the stubborn thing you are wouldn’t do it.”

“How could I? You know I have to be ready to fly when that silly Odds gets a notion. Now look what happened. We’ve lost him.”

Nancy rung her hands and gazed up and down the empty corridor. “Let’s go back, Margot. I’m sure we’ll be pulling into port within the hour.”

“That’s why we have to do this now. When we get to port, you can bet many of the passengers will be going home, and the killer might be one of them. If we don’t solve this case ourselves, it may go cold.”

“We’re not detectives!”

“Shh! Keep your voice down. Do you want us to be discovered?”

“What I want is a nice slice of cake. It’s not mine, so it’s far beneath what I’m used to, but it’s not bad either.”

“Honestly, Nancy, this is no time for cake.” Margot’s stomach chose that inopportune time to growl, but she ignored it. She hadn’t eaten much at breakfast because she was so steamed at Odds. As it turned out, giving him the cold shoulder got him to cooperate. Who would have thought it? Before long, she might figure him out enough to stop his misbehavior all together. That would be the day she enjoyed peace.

And boredom, she couldn’t help thinking.

“Come on, Nancy. Let’s go.” She tugged Nancy’s arm with new vigor. If things got dangerous, after all, she could count on Odds to scratch the bad guy as he had done before. She and Nancy hadn’t taken more than two steps when Margot heard someone singing. “Who’s that?”

Nancy tried to squeeze Margot’s nerves through the pores on her arm. “I don’t know, but they sound close.”

“You’re not afraid of a woman singing?”

“It might be a ghost. I’ve heard stories about cruise ships.” Nancy’s eyes grew round. “And listen, it’s slurred.”

“The ghost has been drinking too much?” Margot freed her arm with extreme effort. When she got Nancy’s hand pried off, the two of them panted in exhaustion. “Let’s go see, but quietly.”

They tiptoed along the hall and came to the end. Margot peeked around the corner and spotted an open doorway. Outside it stood a cart, blocking their progress. Margot straightened.

“It’s a maid. We’re going to have to get past her. You’re right, Nancy. I think the woman has been drinking.
